A former 26-year-old middle school teacher accused of having sex with her 8th grade student posted bail Thursday set at $12,500.
The ex-science teacher is accused of having sex with a 14-year-old male middle school student. She was charged Wednesday with two counts of lewd or lascivious battery and one count of transmission of harmful materials to a minor.
She resigned from her job Monday.
According to Volusia County sheriff’s deputies, the woman carried on a sexual relationship with her former student beginning in November 2017. The pair allegedly had their encounters at her house while her husband was at work and inside a barn on the teen’s parent’s property, according to reports.
Detectives claim they also obtained provocative photos of the woman, which she allegedly sent to the teen.
Sex between teachers and students in the state of Florida has been labeled an epidemic. And while our Florida Sex Crimes Lawyers at Whittel & Melton think this is debatable, there is certainly no arguing that it is becoming increasingly more common to see teacher’s being arrested on the nightly news.
The woman in this case joins a list of female teachers in Florida who have been accused of having sex with male students. In October 2008, a 45-year-old teacher in South Daytona was arrested on allegations of having sex with a 17-year-old student. She pleaded no contest to a second-degree felony charge and received house arrest for a year. She also was required to register as a sex offender. Perhaps the most notorious case in Florida occurred in 2004 when a 24-year-old woman was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old student multiple times in Hillsborough and Marion counties. She pleaded guilty to a count of lewd and lascivious battery and received three years of house arrest and seven years of probation. She, too, is a registered sex offender.
