A Leto High School teacher has been arrested and charged with unlawful sex with a minor.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the 30-year-old teacher was arrested on Tuesday night following an investigation into a possible sexual relationship he had with a former student.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Section detectives responded to Leto to investigate the sexual offense, after a former student, now 19, told school officials she had a relationship with the man.
The student said she had the sexual relationship when she was a 17-year-old junior. The teacher was 28 years old at the time of the alleged incident.
Detectives said the man made statements allegedly admitting to the victim that he had a sexual relationship with her when she was a minor.
Detectives responded to the man’s residence, and he was placed in custody, and charged with Unlawful Sexual Activity with Certain Minors.
He was booked into Falkenburg Road Jail.
Any teacher’s career can come to a crashing halt once he is accused of having sex with a student. Those allegations alone carry an immediate social stigma. Outraged peers and parents will make their judgements known long before a trial or verdict.
If you are under investigation or have been charged with a sex offense, you need to obtain legal counsel immediately to protect your rights. Your career ending is only the first of many severe penalties that could be ahead of you. You can certainly lose your teaching license, but also your freedom. Moreover, you may be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of your life.
