Man Sentenced to 37 Years for Sex Trafficking

A South Florida man was sentenced to 37 years in federal prison Monday for sex-trafficking and firearm offenses.

The 28-year-old Royal Palm Beach man was convicted of sex-trafficking women in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

A jury found the man guilty of these charges in September. He allegedly made the women call him “King,” and used threats and violence to force women into prostitution. According to reports, one of the alleged victims was a homeless woman who the man met in Tampa and held captive for several days in Broward County before she escaped.

The women told police that the man pimped them by organizing prostitution “dates” for them and posting provocative photos of them on Backpage.com.

U.S. District Judge Jose Martinez sentenced the man to 30 years for sex-trafficking, followed by seven years for the weapons charge.

Prosecutors, legislators and even the media often exaggerate sex trafficking charges in order to maintain an appearance of being tough on crime. In these types of cases, inflated charges and prosecutor’s pushing for maximum sentencing can weaken a defendant’s defense strategy. A South Florida Sex Crimes Defense Lawyer at Whittel & Melton can challenge the evidence against you and make sure you are protected from the initial investigation all the way through trial.
