A 14-year-old Georgia boy was arrested Monday after he allegedly tried to sexually batter a hotel housekeeper while she was changing towels in his room at an International Drive hotel.
He was charged with attempted sexual battery, false imprisonment and battery.
The housekeeper claims she knocked on a guest’s door Friday asking if the room needed to be serviced. The teen apparently told her he needed fresh towels.
According to police, the woman entered the bathroom and changed the towels. When she tried to leave, the teen allegedly stood in the hallway, latched the door and exposed himself.
The teen is accused of grabbing the woman’s arms and trying to pull her shirt off.
The two apparently struggled for a minute or two until the woman was able to get out of the room.
Being accused of committing a sexual offense can have serious ramifications for a juvenile. A minor can receive harsh penalties if he or she is convicted of a sexually motivated crime and these penalties can have lasting impacts, particularly if prosecutors decide to try a juvenile as an adult. The Florida Sex Crimes Lawyers at Whittel & Melton firmly believe in rehabilitating children as opposed to locking them away. We fight aggressively for alternative sentencing options for children so that they can work towards a new start on life.
It can be devastating for a parent to find out their child has been accused of attempting to commit a sex crime, and unfortunately some parents do not understand just how serious these allegations can be. As a parent or guardian, you should never allow your child to speak to law enforcement without consulting with a criminal defense lawyer first. It is important to realize that many of the rules and procedures in juvenile court are different than adult court. While similar in some respects to the adult justice system, the Florida juvenile court system has its own customs, rules and regulations.
Juveniles have the same rights as adults. If your child is arrested in Florida, they should invoke their rights, and refuse to answer questions without an attorney present, cooperate with police within reason and resist a search without a proper warrant. Juveniles arrested should insist on having their parents as well as a Florida Sex Crimes Lawyer present before answering any questions or even speaking about the sexual allegation. Time is of the essence in regard to juvenile cases, so arm your child with the proper legal counsel needed before appearing court.
