Tamarac Man Accused of Prostituting a Teenager

Broward County police arrested a Tamarac, FL man on a federal child trafficking charge for promoting the prostitution of a teenage girl and advertising her sexual services on the Internet.

The 34-year-old man allegedly paid for web site ads promoting sex with a 17-year-old teen with his credit card. Prosecutors and the FBI have supposed text messages from the man and the teen about prostitution activities.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, the teen has worked as a prostitute for the Tamarac man in California and Florida since she was 13.

The man is being held in the Broward County main jail in Fort Lauderdale. He will remain there throughout the course of his trial.

The charges brought against this man fall under the realm of human trafficking which is the illegal trade or sale of human beings for the commercial uses of sexual exploitation or enforced labor. These charges can also be classified as sexual exploitation of a minor. If convicted of the charges, the man could face a sentence of 10 years to life imprisonment and a possible $250,000 fine.

Forcing someone to become a prostitute or participating in any endeavor related to sex trafficking, human trafficking or child prostitution are extremely serious offenses that usually result in felony charges on a federal level. Offenses held in federal court are usually more serious in nature than state level and the way they are investigated, prosecuted and penalized are much more severe. Crimes on a federal level have federal sentencing guidelines that impose minimum penalties, which rarely allow for leniency by the federal judge.
