Former Jacksonville Police Officer Faces Up to 30 Years in Prison After Pleading Guilty to Sex Charges

Whittel & Melton 866-608-5529 – Florida Sex Crimes Attorneys

A 48-year-old former veteran Jacksonville cop recently pleaded guilty to attempted capital sexual battery and custodial sexual battery.

He was arrested last year after two girls, one younger than 12 and the other younger than 18, told police they were the victims of sexual attacks by the man between June 2008 and August 2011.

He was originally charged with 13 counts of sex crimes, but reached a deal with the State to plead guilty to two of the crimes.

The man was a police officer for 25 years. He will be sentenced next month.

When sexual battery is committed upon a victim 12 years of age or older by a person in a position of authority or control, the crime is classified as a first-degree felony punishable by up to 30 years in Florida State Prison. Whether or not the victim consented to the act is irrelevant, as this cannot be used as a defense.

Upon release from prison, this former cop will be required to register as a sexual offender for the rest of his life. Registered sex offenders are required to provide authorities with constant updates on where they live and other personal information. In addition, this label can restrict career prospects and contact with minors.

Sexual battery charges, especially those involving minors, can be some of the most difficult cases to resolve. Often, there is very little evidence to prove a crime actually occurred. These cases often boil down to one person’s word against the other, and the court tends to side with the victim. While the charges carry very severe consequences, the Florida Sex Crimes Defense Lawyers at Whittel & Melton can help you receive the most positive outcome possible. In many sex crimes cases, a strong defense can lead to reduced charges, reduced penalties or even a complete dismissal of all charges. Even if the evidence stacked against you is overwhelming, a solid defense can minimize the penalties you receive.
